Barataria Preserve: The Swamp South of New Orleans
Barataria Preserve: The Swamp South of New Orleans
Part of Jean Lafitte National Historical Park, 6589 Barataria Blvd in Marrero. Cross the Crescent City Connection and head south. Free parking, free admission. The boardwalk loop is 1.5 miles, flat, and will deliver you a legitimate Louisiana swamp experience without a guide, a boat, or a plan.
Cypress knees rise from glassy water. Spanish moss drips from every branch. Alligators sun on logs with the relaxed posture of animals who are not performing for you. At the midpoint the forest opens into marsh — cattails, pelican silhouettes, a red-winged blackbird pulling notes from the reeds. The boardwalk is cool underfoot and the water mirrors everything.
February through April is the window — migratory birds, gentle temperatures. Summer is a humid marathon with mosquitoes thick enough to constitute atmosphere. Bring bug spray regardless. Water, grippy shoes (boards get slick), and the patience to let the swamp come to you.
